What is the difference between Square Leg and Rectangular Leg

This is mainly aesthetic; the square leg looks chunkier and the rectangular slimmer. The Square leg is around 5% more stable at height than the rectangular leg.

How stable are the desks? Do they wobble?

If you look at the internet you will see an enormous amount of information about desk stability and a lot of it is wrong.

So we would advise to largely ignore it. Standing at the end of a desk and pushing it is not a good representation of how you will use the desk nor its stability. This tests the response of the desk to forced oscillation setting up essentially simple harmonic motion.

Low amplitude non-forced oscillation is the main concern for standing desks as you either type on them or write on them. Let's face it keyboard typing is the most prevalent use case and how well this is handled by the desk is what is most important to users, We design our desks using computer aided design, analysis and manufacturing to ensure the desk is stable and is well damped. We try to balance the desk weight against it's rigidity and we use finite element analysis to focus on each aspect of the design.

In the end the desk does have to move and the leg sections have to slide one inside the other. Basic geometry means even a small movement at floor level equates to a larger movement at desk working height. So at top height (1.3m) the desk will not be quite as stable as it is at say 0.7m. Could we make them more stable - yes - but not for the same price, with the same aesthetic design and at roughly the same weight and definitely not the same cost. Desk design is a compromise between many factors.

In practical terms what does this mean. Well our Series 2 square leg is the most stable desk we have ever sold or tested due to the aspect ratio of the legs. The Pro version performs identically to the standard version in terms of stability.

Looking at the historical data, having sold thousands of desks (and some to customers with a real concern on stability) we have never had one returned. As long as the desks are built correctly and loaded to a reasonable weight we can say that in almost all cases clients are very satisfied with the stability. Note a stable, solid, level floor will greatly help stability. Any desk foot movement is undesirable.

Are the desks easy to build? Do you provide an assembly service?

Our desk are designed to be simple to build and we provide excellent instruction manuals and extremely useful video instructions. If it is your first time building one of these desks, we would recommend it should take around 45mins to 1 hour to build. Note that we design our Series 2 desks to be quick to build for commercial installations where time is money. Experienced installers can build a desk in 15 mins.

Our Series 2 desks are of a commercial standard in terms of their design and manufacture. All the fixings and fasteners have large thread sizes and the holes well tapped. They can be disassembled and re-assembled any number of times.

Any tips on installation would be to have your desk top inserted so that you do not have to screw into the top with a self-tapping screw. Two people are not necessary but as they say "two heads are better than one".

Currently we do not have an assembly service but we are working on it for 2021.

Can I use my own desktop with a Gostand frame?

Yes, however we do not recommend using a desk top deeper than 90cm, Any deeper and the frame will be slightly more liable to tip over.

In terms of weight and depth of the top as long as it does not exceed the maximum loaded weight of the desk then you can put it on. The standard screws are for 18mm desk-tops but we recommend to check them.

If you have any doubts then just check with us.

Can I get a special sized desktop?

We currently do not have the capacity to offer this service.

Since the Covid-19 outbreak we have been inundated with orders and this a bespoke item that is time consuming to make. Unfortunately we do not have the machine time nor manpower currently to offer bespoke sizes.

We hope offer this again in 2021, please feel free to ask then if you are interested

Why do electric desks support a heavier load than a manual? Why do they go higher?

This is due to the design of the gearing at the top and inside the legs. The gearing systems between manual and electric desks are quite different and this results in different maximum loads.

All our dual motor electric desks have three section legs and as such they will go to a greater maximum height than manual desk which with only two section legs are constrained in how high they can go up.

Can I have a bespoke sized 90-degree desk?

We currently do not have the capacity to offer this service.

Since the Covid-19 outbreak we have been inundated with orders and this a bespoke item that is time consuming to make. Unfortunately we do not have the machine time nor manpower currently to offer bespoke sizes.

Can the 90-degree desk be reconfigured to use it as 3 legs in a straight row?

Our 90-degree frame cannot be converted to be used in this way. It can only be assembled in the 90-degree position.

How long does it take to between standing and sitting in a manual sit stand desk vs electric?

We suppose the smart answer is it depends how quickly you wind the handle. Our dual motor electric desks move at 38mm/s so from min to max height is approx 20 secs. Moving a manual desk from min to max height takes about 50 secs but can be quicker or slower.

How does the handle fold away under a manual desk?

Position the handle horizontally, pull all the way out. It should fold underneath and sit in the holder.

What is the difference between Pre-drilling and Metal Inserts

Our standard desktops are sold blank, with no holes drilled in. You can still assemble this way and it's not very difficult, but you do need to pierce the hard top surface of the desk-top.

Pre-drilling is when we drill small pilot holes in the underneath of the desktop to penetrate the hard surface. You can then screw easily into the softer core of the top to attach the desktop to the frame.

Metal inserts are metal components fitted into the underneath of the desktop. You attach the desktops to the frame by tightening screws into the inserts with a hex key. This removes the need for a screwdriver and means the top does not get punctured during assembly. It also means you can remove the top as many times as you need.

What does handset location mean?

The handset is your controller for raising/lowering your desk. It can be positioned anywhere on the underneath of the desktop but is best positioned at the front edge for easier access. If you have your desktop inserted or pre-drilled, you can choose to have it on the far right- or left-hand side. If you are assembling the desk without pre-drilling or inserts you can position it wherever suits you best.

If buying a manual desk it's where the handle is.

Can I have cable port holes cut but not buy cable ports?

No. A large part of the cost of the cable ports is putting them on the CNC machine and cutting them. To have cable port holes and but no port covers simply order plastic cable ports and when your desk arrives remove them.

Can I have a 25mm thick top and not an 18mm thick top?

Not any longer. We stopped manufacturing 25mm tops for a number of reasons:

  • They are not needed for anything more than aesthetic reasons. 18mm tops are perfectly strong to hold the maximum allowable weight of the desk. With inserts we can hang up to 50Kg from underneath the desk. There is no use case we ahve come across where 18mm tops were insufficient for the job.
  • 25mm tops are more environmentally unsound. It takes a lot more trees and a lot more energy to make a 25mm top.
  • They are above the legal lifting weight in the UK and difficult to handle when above 140cm x 80cm which we feel is unfair on our couriers.
  • It takes more fuel to transport them and also more fuel to get the jumbo sheets to our factory.

Is an 18mm thick desk top strong enough to hold my dual monitors?

Yes the desk tops are strong enough for office use, a thicker desk top is not required.

Our sit-stand desks have twin bars which run across underneath the desk to make the frame more stable. These provide significant support to the desk-top. So it is not necessary to have a super thick top.

Where are cable ports positioned?

We always position the centres 100mm from the back edge and 130/140mm from the side edge for 60/80mm ports.

How narrow/wide can I make my manual frame?

A manual frame can go down to 115cm at its narrowest setting, although at this point the handle will come out further than the side of the desk by approx 100mm.

How narrow/wide can I make my electric frame?

An electric frame can go down to 105cm at its narrowest setting,.

Can I set my manual so that I can set it to the highest possible height, but the handle will still fold away?

During installation set the legs to their highest position and then fit the handle. This will allow you to put the handle in the correct position to fold away while the legs are at their highest position.

How far in is the cable tray positioned if I select pre-drilling/inserts

The cable tray will be set approx 60mm from the back edge of the desk as standard unless a monitor arm is ordered with us in which case it will be positioned 90mm from the back edge of the desk.

Should you wish to have your cable tray a specific distance away from the back edge then you can advise us but there will be a programming charge for the CNC machine.

Should you wish to have it 90mm from the back edge when not ordering a monitor arm then put this in the order notes. It must be in the notes. Do not call or email as this is not 100% guaranteed to link to your order.

What is the difference between a Series 2 and a Series 3 desk?

Series 3 is our entry level frame which is perfect for small office/home office, it has a 3-year warranty rather than 5 year. The electronics and motors are 100% Chinese as is the frame manufacture. Aesthetically the frame has a different, less European look with slightly more gloss to the powder coat. Functionally it is largely the same as a eries 2 desk it is in the finish and refinement that the cost difference lies.

The Series 2 is a more commercial desk frame and has a better quality of metal work and powder coating and upgraded electrics and comes with the 5 year warranty. The drives and controls are made by Ti-Motion in Taiwan and the powder coating is full matt. The desk has a long pedigree and has longevity rates based on a large number of units sold into the market.

What is the difference between a Series 2 and a Series 2 Pro?

The series 2 Pro is a higher spec version of the Series 2, it has enhanced diagnostics in the control box so if anything were ever to go wrong it is much easier for us to work out the problem. It also has upgraded gearing in the motors and the components are all to higher tolerances. The Pro is also an improved version aesthetically with hidden glide holes on the legs and an improved design on the feet of the frame too.

You can also use the Bluetooth function on the handset to connect to a Standing App for your iPhone or Android phone allowing the option to control your desk height, memory function, customised sit/stand cycle, tracking/calculating calories burned and safety support-error alarm notices. There is twin USB ports on the handset.

What are the advantages of an electric over a manual desk?

This is not such a strange question and one we get asked a lot. So why electric over manual:

Pros:

  • No need to wind the desk. This can be a deal breaker for some clients and some people develop a psychological barrier to wanting to wind the desk and so stop using the standing function. Strange but true.
  • You always end up at the same standing or seated height by using the memory function on the electric desk.
  • It's much smoother to move up and down.
  • Electric desks are more stable.
  • Electric desks do have a certain wow factor you will not get from a manual desk.
  • Our electric desks have a greater top height and height range.

Cons:

  • Electric desks are more expensive.
  • You do have to plug them in so you need to be near an electrical outlet.
  • Manual desks should last forever as there is almost nothing to wear out.

So there you have it. Some of the advantages and disadvantages. For me electric every time. You only live once.

Do you offer Trial Products?

We have offered trial products in the past but unfortunately over 50% of them end up scrapped as they are returned in such poor condition. If you want to go ahead with one of our frames what I would advise is this. Place the order online through your company, when the frame arrives take photographs of how it has been packed and the condition it arrived to you. We use really sturdy internal packaging so you need to keep this as well as the outer box in the event that you need to re-pack the frame and return it. The frame must return to us in exactly the same packaging it arrived to you, It is likely that the external box will receive some damage on the return journey back to us so we would advise to wrap it in plastic to keep it clean. I would advise that you again take photographs as you re-pack the frame. If the actual frame is damaged when we receive it back into stock but can be modified or repaired to bring it back to a resalable condition you will be charged a fee for this work. However, if it is damaged in a way that means we can no longer sell it, we will not be able to offer you a refund in this instance and the product will be returned to you.

So basically as long as we get a product back that is pristine, re-saleable, everything is in the packaging that you received then we have to credit it fully as per statute.

Return of unwanted item/ incorrectly ordered item?

It is no problem to return incorrect/unwanted items, the products must be returned to us in good condition, all the box contents must be as delivered to you and be suitable for re sale. Please contact us by email for a Goods Returns form. We can arrange a courier collection of the goods at a pre-agreed cost or you can arrange to send the goods back with the courier of your choice.

Shipping to Channel Islands?

Yes, we frequently ship to the Channel Islands.

It is VAT free.

You can pay online and we refund the VAT or you can advise us of what you want and we will send you an invoice link to pay online.

You can also pay the shipping online as we have an option for the off-shore islands.

Can a credit card be recharged/reused to pay another order?

Our checkout is Level 1 PCI DSS compliant and PSD2 compliant (New EU norm).

We cannot retain any card details after your transaction has been processed. We can re-fund to it but not add extra charges.

You will need to go through the checkout again, but it is super quick as we are really only looking for the card number again.

I am an EU customer domiciled in the EU and not the UK. Is it VAT free?

VAT free if the company has a valid EU VAT number. If not, VAT would have to be applied at the prevailing UK rate of 20%.

If you are a legitimate EU purchaser you will not be able to use the checkout. You will need to contact us directly. If you are based in the Republic of Ireland then please use our Gostand Ireland website www.gostand.ie

Remember to use the country prefix when providing a VAT number to us.

Can I specify a delivery date?

We use 3rd party couriers so we cannot 100% guarantee that a delivery will take place on a specific day. We are more than happy to store goods and dispatch for arrival on a target date but we cannot be held responsible or liable if for some reason the courier fails to deliver on the target day.

Do you do discount?

Our prices are a fair reflection of the quality of the products we sell, we do not offer sale prices as it would be unfair on the customers who have purchased previously. Should you wish to place an order for a large quantity of desks then certainly speak to us regarding the possibility of discounted prices.

My frame has arrived but not my desktop

If you opted for 2-day shipping TNT may deliver your frame 1 day earlier than your desk top. The desktop will take the full 2 days to ship due to its size. It does not fit on the conveyor belts at TNT depots so must be manually handled.

Any General shipping advice?

Our policy is to try and make shipping and cost effective and as simple as possible so you receive your goods on time and in the right condition. That being said it is important that you understand we are shipping large, bulky items and so we need your co-operation in making sure our deliveries arrive as planned. These are not items we can pop in your letterbox, leave with your neighbour or stash in your woodshed. Specifically we need you to help us by doing the following:

1. Plan your delivery. If you order before noon your delivery will most likely arrive two days later but might arrive a day either side of that. If you order after noon your delivery will most likely arrive three days later but might arrive a day either side of that.

2. Check your tracking and make sure you are going to be in on the day of delivery.

3. Understand that if you have ordered a desk it weighs 50kg and has a desk top nearly the height of a person and no-one wants to return the following day to attempt a second delivery.

4. Read our Delivery and Returns legal terms and conditions as they are binding.

Who do you ship with?

We have spent some time finding reliable and careful shipping partners and we are proud to work with them. They are:

TNT - Courier delivery of large items
DPD - Courier delivery of smaller items
  DSV - Palletised delivery

We know that these companies are reliable, they delivery on time >99% of the time, they handle our goods with care and they have tracking which can be relied upon. Note palletised delivery does not have tracking.

How will the goods be packaged?

All our goods are packaged for courier shipment and so if the package is damage please email us immediately with photos if possible. If the packaging is fine open it up.

If there are any missing items email us immediately.

If there is any damage to internal parts email us immediately with photos if possible.

All of our packaging can be recycled.

What are the shipping costs?

Shipping to mainland UK is a 2 day service and is free. Shipping to Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland is a next day service and is free.

We charge extra for the following zones:

Channel and offshore Islands: £48.00 flat rate for any shipment up to 20Kg and then £1.05 per Kg thereafter.

We do not want to do so however we have no choice. The shipping companies charge us extra. We also understand that this negatively affects customers purchasing small items as the shipment costs become prohibitive.

For heavier deliveries above 200Kg we may put your product on a pallet to prevent loss and damage. We will advise if doing so.

If you are planning to purchase in real bulk it is better not to use the website but to email us on support@gostand.co.uk.

Can I have next day delivery?

Yes. We have a number of options on the website for next day delivery but it does cost extra.

Note we cannot be held liable or responsible if the goods are delayed by the carrier. We will apply on your behalf for a rebate for the extra shipping cost but the terms and conditions of the shippers are heavily weighted in their favour.

Can I have Saturday delivery?

Sorry but not any more. It was a disaster and our clients were often left disappointed. We have terminated the service.

What will the delivery person do?

Delivery is to the door. The delivery person will not remove or take away any packaging. They are not obliged to place your delivery inside your house but will probably do so if asked.

I'm having a palletised delivery? What will happen?

The pallet will arrive on a truck (not a van) which has a tail lift and a pallet truck. The driver will offload the pallet and use the pallet truck to deliver to your door or goods in. Delivery is to the door. The delivery person will not remove or take away any packaging. They are not obliged to place your delivery inside your house or office. They will normally remove the pallet again if requested but are not obliged to.
